Worflow for Mark III

Manufactured for Facial Capture

Faceware has been building professional head-mounted cameras for facial motion capture for over 10 years.

For Realtime or recorded performance capture workflows.

Explore the main features for the Mark III.

Realtime transmission with less than 1 millisecond delay.

On set you can’t afford any downtime due to data recording concerns. We transmit all data off the actors’ body to an operator's station to ensure with 100% certainty that your performances were captured.

Glass Optic Lenses.

You never know who you’re going to capture. For that reason, we’ve included 3 lenses that run the gamut and provide you options as an operator to get any face framed and in focus.

Custom Fitting for all head-sizes.

Each Mark III System includes a small, medium, and large helmet with three interchangeable thicknesses of padding configurable in 4 different zones (front, top, back). This custom fit provides a stable video image, and provides a comfortable fit for prolonged use.

Add-on Velcro for marker placement.

The surface on our helmet designs allow for stable applications of Velcro for consistent marker placement. Additionally, many audio engineers choose to mount lav mics from the helmet.

Flexible Frame Rate and Resolution.

The Mark III System can capture in nearly all popular frame rates and resolutions including 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, 60 at 720 and 1080 resolutions. For a full list of resolutions and framerates.

Color 3G-SDI Video.

Our technology utilizes the color information within the images the Mark III captures, essential to the maximum quality of performance capture possible. Additionally, by using a standard broadcast video signal, its easy to plan your production and post-production workflows.

Manageable Data.

Stereo and quad-capture are capable of capturing extremely high-resolution data, but at what cost? Four video cameras means four times the data for every take. We believe that you must evaluate the entire performance capture workflow and data management is a massive concern. All videos that are recorded with the Mark III system are ready-to-edit right away, no need for video conversion or compression.

Manageable Data.

Responsive engineering and support.

We are passionate about performance capture—our dedicated performance capture team will work hard to ensure you have the best possible experience on-set with the Mark III systems. We also have a ticketing system for custom engineering or troubleshooting requests.

End-To-End Extendable Warranty:
Never Pay For Repairs.

All Mark III camera systems include a one-year extendable end-to-end warranty. This warranty covers all repairs or replacements at no added cost to the user.

Additionally, when you extend your warranty, each year we include a free Care Package which includes our most common “wear” items: batteries, lenses, velcro straps, tools, screws, and nuts.

Balanced Design

The wrong design may lead to “weighted” head movements and cause actor strain and fatigue. Our balanced design ensures stable yet comfortable capture for the rigors of production

Technology to assist operators

As an operator you already have enough stress and anxiety to make sure the data you capture is consistent and quality. The Mark III Complete Facial Capture System includes a QC Monitor that has many beneficial integrated technologies to assist on-set operators.

The focus assist is a must-- the more red you see in the image, the more in-focus your performer is. Some operators prefer to even leave the focus assist on during performance capture to ensure consistency from shot to shot.

Additionally, the monitor includes an on-screen grid for consistent camera placement shot to shot and day to day.Lastly, use the embedded feature to load in a “screen grabbed” image from day one and overlay it at 50% opacity for day two, etc.

Two is not a crowd

All Mark III Camera systems enable limitless cameras to be run simultaneously, however this is a limit on wireless video bandwidth which restrict the number of wireless units on set to 4-5. Shepherd can be run to trigger multiple systems concurrently, including using our Lync feature to trigger your facial system with a master source such as Vicon Shogun or Blade or Optitrack Motive software.

The only way to do Realtime.

Our 60 fps wireless operation ensures the responsiveness necessary for Realtime lip sync and performance. Fast frame-rate allows the speech of your characters to be read, and wireless capability reduces stress and obstruction for your performers. The combination of high frame rate and wireless capability increases the fidelity of your performance that is transferred to your characters instantly, thus creating a more engaging and interactive experience!

Body mocap triggering via Shepherd.

Shepherd automates Faceware’s Mark III headcam recording functions and integrates with body motion capture systems, like Vicon and Optitrack, to synchronise facial and body mocap recordings on PCs and Windows tablets.

In a typical motion capture recording session, operators work with one software package for body mocap, and another for facial mocap. Shepherd syncs a studio’s face and body mocap pipelines to make the capture process less complex and more efficient, and automates certain tasks to ease the workload.

Commonly asked questions about the Mark III
As a new user, it may take 10 to 15 minutes to properly fit an actor's helmet, build the headcam, and frame and focus the actor's face. Once you've mastered this process, it'll get much faster. It takes roughly 5 to 7 minutes per actor for Headcam operators to do this process.
No calibration process is necessary for our Mark III Headcam to be used in the field unless you plan to use Live Server (Faceware's realtime software). Live Server has a 1 second calibration process.
If the Mark III System is running in wireless mode, then a single battery will last approximately 3 hours. If the Mark III System is wired, then a single battery will last 12 hours.
This is entirely up to the person who will track the footage in Analyzer, our technology does not require markers, although about 1/2 our user-base prefers to apply marks on the face. Markers drawn on the actor's faces can help with consistent landmark placement but does not directly impact how the software ingests the data.
Everyone's face is a different size and, depending on the motion, a shorter bar and wider lens are required to capture the best data. Be conscious of the actor's performance and the size of their face. Pick the best combination of bar and lens to capture data that clearly shows an actor's full face and head. By default, we recommend using the long hoop and 4.3mm lens.

This is dependant on the project itself. Are you making a game? Is your project for television? Our cameras currently capture at the following resolutions and framerates...

  • 720p 60fps
  • 720p 59.94fps
  • 720p 50fps
  • 1080p 60fps
  • 1080p 59.94fps
  • 1080p 50fps
  • 1080p 30fps
  • 1080p 29.97fps
  • 1080p 25fps
  • 1080p 24fps
  • 1080p 23.98fps

If you are unsure, we recommend 720p 60 or 59.94 fps as our general best practice.

Our Mark III headcams do not come with a built-in microphone, but audio can be embedded in the face video by connecting an audio feed from an engineer's sound mixer to the audio input on the back of the AJA Ki Pro, Ki Pro Rack, or Ki Prol Ultra Plus. Ask you sound engineer for a line-level, mono mix feed via an XLR cable. Most audio engineers prefer to attach microphones to the helmet itself or on the boom arm that holds our camera.

You can capture up to 5 actors wirelessly. For wired setups, there's no limit unless you are limited by the number of digital video recorders that you own.
Yes, all of them. Integrating the systems is simply a matter of attaching markers or sensors to an actor's helmet and positioning the performance capture belt in a place it doesn't occlude or interfere with the body data. For further integration, have you tried Shepherd?
Yes. Markers can be placed anywhere on the helmet, but it's best to put them in places where they don't move. For example, it isn't wise to place markers on the ratchet strap on the back of the helmet because it is tightened and loosened throughout the day.
Yes, our system includes a one year end-to-end warranty that covers every single part and component. The warranty ensures that any part or component will replace or be repaired at no additional cost, including roundtrip shipping from our Austin repair facility. Rush shipping charges may be extra.
Depending on our order queue most systems ship within 7-10 business days, in many instances the ship time is far less. As soon as your order is placed, our operations manager will be in touch with shipping timelines.
